Cill Ulta in collaboration with Irbea and Interreg CASCADE hosted a Biochar Demonstration Day on the 24/09/2024 in the glasshouses in Cill Ulta. A lot of interest from local farmers, river conservation groups and the general public, Donegal County Council, Údarás na Gaeltachta and ATU. Sean Finan and Stephen McCormack of IrBEA outlined the work of the association and provided insights into the bioenergy and biochar sectors in Ireland. They outlined the role that biochar is likely to play in meeting our climate change targets and objectives as well as the likely role it will play in any future carbon farming initiatives as well as enhancing the Circular Bioeconomy in Ireland. Guest speaker on the day was Bernard Carey of the Biochar Co-op and the recently finished EIP project Biomass2 Biochar.
The aim of the day was to build the knowledge base the Donegal stakeholders have already.
