Developed from Romaine lettuce and a butterhead type lettuce, Little Gem lettuce, botanical name Lactuca sativa, is an annual plant of the sunflower family.
Use it just as you'd use romaine, but the best part is that the leaves are small enough that you don't have to break them down for a salad. Their distinct boat shape cradles dressing and toppings perfectly.
